Bike New York is this Sunday (May 6th 2001)! (note: you still can register at the event) However, based on our past experience I put together the following list of things to remember.
before the ride:

  • tune your bike at least three days before the ride
  • put on slicks (if you’re riding a mt. bike)
  • check and adjust your break pads (get new ones if they seem flat)
  • check your spokes and rims for any loose spokes or rubbing

Online Communities Endure

a good article about how online communities have endured despite the shortage of service offerings.

some good quotes:
“For every story about Internet addiction leading victims to ignore their families and become withdrawn, anti-social, and depressed, there is a countervailing example of a person who has found a support group, employment prospects, or a community of like-minded topical enthusiasts through the ’net.”

“If broadcast, run by large entertainment companies, takes back some of the mindshare that had been gained by interactive media, we risk a tilting of our focus back towards the mindless television watching that threatens to turn our brains to sauerkraut.”

Virtual Network Computing

What is VNC? … it looks like a multi-platform light-weight and free version of pcAnywhere, but don’t take my word for it …

“VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote display system which allows you to view a computing ‘desktop’ environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures.”

From: VNC – Virtual Network Computing from AT&T Laboratories Cambridge [thanks john]

Q: What is Project JXTA?

A: Project JXTA started as a research project incubated at Sun Microsystems under the guidance of Bill Joy and Mike Clary. Its goal is to explore a vision of distributed computing using peer-to-peer topology, and to develop basic building blocks and services that would enable innovative applications for peer groups. Recognizing this effort would benefit from expert coders outside of Sun (Joys Law: Innovation Happens Elsewhere), the project has posted a draft of a specification and some prototype code to a web site, www.jxta.org under the Apache Software License, encouraging others to join in our efforts. The project now is evolving daily.
